Building Community Through Nature, Yoga, and Connection

It started with a class—DCP 6205: Ecological Issues 1 in Sustainability and the Built Environment. While pursuing my degree at the University of Florida, I envisioned creating a space that combined sustainability, architecture, and community. That vision began as North Florida Red Barn Farm (NFRBF)—a small ecological retreat offering agritourism, cultural learning, and recreational services.
But life has a way of redirecting us. During my studies, I faced sciatic nerve pain, which led me to yoga as a path to healing. I had no idea this personal journey would evolve into something much bigger.
Twisted Roots Yoga: Where Healing and Connection Meet
As I healed, the idea for Red Barn Farms shifted. Twisted Roots Yoga Studio emerged—a sanctuary for movement, mindfulness, and connection in the heart of nature. Building this community wasn’t just about creating a space to teach yoga but bridging gaps and making it easier for others to find meaningful connections.
I know firsthand how difficult it can be to move to a new place and feel disconnected. That’s why it was so important to create a welcoming environment where people could gather for yoga and shared experiences that foster lifelong friendships and a sense of belonging. The rewards of these social connections ripple far beyond the mat—they enrich our lives in ways we carry with us forever.
Building It, and They Came
My husband jokingly calls me the “pioneer woman” because starting something new in a rural area takes courage. But I believed that people would come if I built a space rooted in nature and community. And they did. Twisted Roots Yoga is a testament to the power of creating spaces where people can find healing and friendship.
Lifelong Benefits of Connection
In yoga, we often talk about balance—not just physical but emotional and social. Through Twisted Roots, I’ve seen how fostering connections with others can be as healing as the practice. Social well-being is deeply intertwined with mental and physical health. By bringing people together in nature, we cultivate both.
Whether through yoga classes, sound baths, or simple moments of reflection, the bonds formed in this community are lasting. Building a space like this wasn’t just about me—it was about creating a bridge for others to cross, find connections, and grow.
Here’s to building connections, strengthening communities, and sharing the journey. We still have work to do out here on our beloved farm, I would love to invite you to check out our classes.
With Love and Light!
